Have You Found What You're Looking For?
Do you remember the song “Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For” by U2?
How did you feel the first time you heard it?
For me, it was another one of those fucking gut-punches.
Like the band was singing that song directly to me.
Even now, years later and in a markedly different place in my life, whenever I hear that song, I still feel that same sense of deep longing.
Life did not give me what I was looking for. I ended up having to take it.
My dad died when I was 19. That breathtaking loss sent me down a rabbit hole that took many, many years to climb out of.
But I did climb out. And I’ve learned so much. All I really want is to share a bit of that wisdom and maybe, make someone else’s journey just a little easier.
A bad decision doesn’t equal a bad person OR a bad life. For God's sake, give yourself a break. How can you learn if you never make a mistake?
You’re not expected to get it right the first time. Or the second. Or even the third. Who the hell told you this? Go smack him. That’s ridiculous. Besides, similarly to the above, how boring would life be? Don’t your best stories come from when life didn’t go exactly as planned?
This one is especially near and dear to me. Don’t let life make you bitter and angry. Don’t let it take that, too. Trust me on this, anger and bitterness attracts more of the same, both in you and in the company you keep.
Here’s my barometer: Does the thought you’re thinking make you feel mean or small or vindictive? If the answer is yes, let that go and choose a kinder, gentler thought. Yes, you really can. Just choose.
Last but not least, for the love of God, stop comparing your journey to anyone else's. It's a fools errand. It will bring you nothing but heartache. I promise this.
"Therefore, be at peace with God, whatever you conceive Him to be And whatever your labors and aspirations, in the noisy confusion of life, keep peace in your soul." ~ Max Ehrmann, Desiderata
Sending you all so much love.
